One antidote to this is to consume less information from those translating limited amounts of evidence to fit their particular viewpoint. Pundits on either side of the political spectrum are guilty of ignoring facts or twisting them to meet their positions. Another one is to use the scientific method when looking at your "hypothesis." Work hard to find evidence that refutes your already formulated conclusion. A related approach is to read articles and watch programs that take the opposite positions to the ones that you usually take. Perhaps you will finds some bit of truth that you are missing.
These sorts of activities take time. However, those with particularly strong opinions would do well to consider undertaking them, if only to be right a little more often.
